2014 Newsroom Highlights

Hundreds of Mormon families and missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently collected food for the ninth annual Winnipeg Harvest Food Drive.

Winnipeg Harvest is a non-profit community-based organization that distributes food to more than 340 agencies. Many individual, business, community and faith groups contribute to this success. The organization moved more than 12 million pounds of food through its warehouse last year.

Colette et Pierre Paul Morin

A Quebec City couple has joined the more than 80,000 missionaries currently serving missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. However, unlike most missionaries in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who are under the age of 25, Pierre-Paul Morin and his wife, Colette, are a retired couple who have raised nine children.

The Morins have been assigned to preside over the Benin Cotonou Mission of the Church and will be responsible for the missionaries in the West African countries of Benin and Togo.

The first province-wide encampment for young women of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was held near Sooke, British Columbia. Nearly 450 young women, some of whom travelled over 1,400 kilometres to attend the event, arrived by car, charter bus, plane or ferry at Camp Barnard, a 250-acre Scouts Canada camp located on Vancouver Island.

Brigham Young University recently welcomed the distinguished Reverend Dr. James Christie as the Canadian delegate at the 21st annual International Law and Religion Symposium. Held 5–6 October 2014 at the J. Reuben Clark Law School in Provo, Utah, the symposium was attended by more than 80 delegates from 40 countries and addressed the theme “Varieties of Secularism, Religion and the Law.”

FamiliesMatter1

In conjunction with the Church’s general women’s meeting on September 27, 2014, Mormon women in Calgary held a book drive to benefit low-income families served by the new Families Matter community hub. The new hub will serve approximately 500 children whose families are primarily refugees from Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan. Some First Nations families will also use the facility.

HamiltonTemple

The Reverend Dr. Karen Hamilton, general secretary of the Canadian Council of Churches, recently presented at the Summer Interfaith Lecture Series at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Dr. Hamilton is committed to speaking about and working for ecumenism, interfaith dialogue, the use of the Bible in the church and local and global justice.

Held at the Hinckley Center at BYU, Dr. Hamilton and other prominent religious leaders who have a diverse perspective and rich experience of ministry were invited to speak to the BYU faculty and staff, seminary and institute graduate students and chaplain candidates.

Basilica

The Brigham Young University-Idaho’s Sinfonietta, a 38-member orchestra, recently concluded a whirlwind tour of Atlantic Canada, leaving thousands of contented music lovers in its path. Eight concerts were coordinated by the Canada Halifax Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Nearly 150 missionaries, assisted by local members of the Church, personally invited over 15,000 residents to enjoy quality music while supporting several organizations in their communities. The concerts raised $10,000 for community charities.

Borrows on Stand

Dr. John Borrows, Canada’s leading indigenous law scholar and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, spoke at the United Church in Toronto, Ontario, as the 2014 Craddock Lecture distinguished guest.

Lena Diab 2014

A ceremony was recently held in Halifax to present the Family Values Awards to community leaders Tom and Rose Marie Smith, Sam and Barb Pike and Joel and Cathy Jacobson. The recipients were recognized for their outstanding contributions in defending family values and advancing standards that support and strengthen families.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints champions the family in principle and in practice. The Family Values Award, which originated in 1991 and was inspired by the renewed emphasis on family issues, acknowledges community leaders who are “striving to advance standards and values that are consistent with the Church position on the family.”
